How to get more car detailing customers

There's a lot of advice out there. Most of it is noise. Here's what the data — from 26,876 U.S. detailers — actually says moves the needle, in priority order.

We analyzed 26,876 car detailers for our industry report, and one thing jumped out: the median detailer has just 16 reviews, while the top-ranked shop in a typical city has 369 — about 23× more. And 90% of everyone rates 4.5★ or higher. Translation: you don't have a quality problem, you have a visibility problem. These five moves fix it, roughly in the order you should tackle them.

1. Own your Google Business Profile

Your Google Business Profile — the listing that shows up in the map — drives more local calls than anything else, and it's free. Yet most detailers leave it half-finished. Fill in every field: correct primary category ("Car detailing service"), all your services, real photos of your work, accurate hours, and regular posts. A complete, active profile is the single fastest way to climb the map pack.

2. Build a review engine (this is the big one)

Reviews are the #1 factor Google uses to rank the local map, and the data shows how lopsided it is: the leader in each city averages 369 reviews to the median's 16. You close that gap the same way they did — by asking every single customer, every time. The shops that win don't ask occasionally; they have a system that fires an automatic request the moment a job is done, with a one-tap link straight to their Google review page. Do that consistently and you'll out-review your market within months.

3. Show up in local search (SEO)

Beyond the map, people search "car detailing near me" and "ceramic coating [your city]." Ranking there means a fast, well-structured website with pages for your services and area, consistent business listings across the web, and steady reviews. Unlike ads, this traffic compounds — the rankings you build this month keep bringing calls next year.

4. Get a website that actually converts

19% of detailers have no real website at all — just a social page or nothing. Most who do have one built it on a cheap template that doesn't rank or turn visitors into bookings. A real site is fast, mobile-first, shows your before/afters, and lets someone book or request a quote in two taps. The site isn't the goal — getting found and booked is. (And despite the hype, only 11 of the 26,876 detailers we analyzed use an AI-builder site — they don't solve the visibility problem.)

5. Turn on Google Ads when you want leads now

SEO and reviews are the long game. When you need calls this week — a slow stretch, a new bay, a push on ceramic — Google Ads and Local Services Ads put you at the top instantly. The math works for detailing because the tickets are high: if a $60 lead lands a $1,500 ceramic job, that's a 25× return. Just make sure every call is tracked so you know it's paying off.

The honest summary

Do them in order. Nail your Google Business Profile and reviews first (free, highest impact), add local SEO and a real site to compound it, and layer ads on when you want to accelerate. That's how the detailers at the top of your market got there — and the data says most of your competitors still haven't.
